It is easy to look at a stack of pack points and assume you can put it toward any missing card. Pokémon TCG Pocket does not work that way. Points earned from one expansion stay with that expansion.
The short version
- Pack points do not expire, according to Pokémon's gameplay FAQ.
- Opening packs earns points for that pack's expansion. You can exchange those points only for cards in the same expansion.
- The expansion code is the useful thing to check. Packs with different names may still share one code and one card set.
For example, Pokémon lists the Mewtwo, Charizard and Pikachu Genetic Apex packs under the same A1 expansion code. The pack art differs, but the expansion code is what matters for points. A pack marked A1a or A2 belongs to a different expansion.
Before you exchange points
Find the card in the game's card list, then check which expansion it belongs to. If you have points in another expansion, waiting will not convert them. You would need to open packs from the expansion that contains the card you want. Pokémon also notes that some cards associated with an expansion do not come from booster packs, so check the card's availability rather than assuming every blank slot is exchangeable.
The good news is that there is no deadline forcing you to spend. If you are unsure which card to take, leave the points alone until you know what is missing from that expansion. That is a simpler decision than trying to keep up with every new pack as it arrives.
