You install something advertised at a couple of gigabytes. A week later your phone says it is using four times that, you have not knowingly downloaded anything, and the storage screen offers no useful explanation.
Nothing has gone wrong. This is how large mobile games are designed to work, and once you know what the space is you can make sensible decisions about it.
The store size is a floor, not a total
Large games ship a small launcher and then download the rest on first run. There are decent reasons for it: it keeps the store listing quick to install, it lets the game fetch only the language and quality tier you need, and it means an update can replace one chunk instead of the whole package.
The consequence is that the number on the store page is roughly the smallest the game will ever be, and often a small fraction of what it settles at.
What the space is actually made of
Roughly in order of how much room it takes
- Textures and models
- Almost always the largest share. High-resolution art is expensive, and many games keep several quality tiers on disk rather than re-downloading when you change a setting.
- Audio and voice
- Fully voiced story games carry a lot of audio, and often multiple language packs. This is frequently the biggest single win when a game lets you manage it.
- Cached downloads
- Event assets, cutscenes and seasonal content the game fetched once and did not clean up. Genuinely disposable, and the target of any in-game "clear cache" option.
- Update leftovers
- Old versions of replaced files. Most games tidy these eventually; some never do.
- Your save data
- Almost always tiny. Whatever is filling your phone, it is not this.
What is safe to clear
Use the game's own storage settings first
Large games increasingly ship a data-management screen letting you remove voice packs, unused languages or downloaded cutscenes. This is by far the safest option because the game knows what it can re-fetch.
Then clear cache, if your platform offers it
Cached data is defined as re-downloadable. Clearing it costs you a slower next launch and nothing else. Be careful to distinguish this from clearing all data, which is a different and much more destructive action.
Offload rather than delete, where supported
Some platforms can remove an app while keeping its documents and settings. For a game you will come back to, this is better than a full uninstall.

Things that do not help as much as people think
- Storage-cleaner apps. Both platforms already manage caches. These mostly re-present built-in tools, and some are advertising vehicles.
- Deleting photos to make room for a game. Understandable, and it treats the symptom. The game will grow again after the next event.
- Restarting the phone. Frees memory, not storage. Different problem.
- A memory card, on most modern handsets. Expandable storage is far less common than it was, and where it exists games often cannot run from it well.
If you are chronically short
The uncomfortable answer is that two or three large games is genuinely what a 64GB phone holds alongside a normal amount of photos. If that is your situation, the realistic options are rotating games in and out — which the offload feature exists for — or accepting that one of them has to go.
Rotating is less painful than it sounds, provided every account is properly linked. Which brings it back to the same check: do that before you need it, not after.
