Most battery advice for phones is written for people who are not playing games. It tells you to close background apps and dim the screen. That advice is not wrong, but it is aimed at the wrong target: when a game is running, the parts of your phone drawing the most power are the graphics processor and the display, and almost everything else is a rounding error.
Here is what actually moves the needle, roughly in order of how much difference it makes.
Cap the frame rate
If a game offers a frame rate setting — often labelled 30, 60 or a high/ultra preset — this is the single most effective control you have. Rendering twice as many frames per second asks the graphics processor to do roughly twice the work, and that work is where the power goes.
For a turn-based game, a card game or an idle game, a lower cap is very hard to notice. For a shooter or a fighting game it is a real trade-off, and you may decide the smoothness is worth the battery. That is a fair choice — just make it deliberately rather than leaving the game on whatever it defaulted to.
Drop the resolution or graphics preset
Large 3D games usually ship a graphics preset with names like low, medium, high and a separate render-resolution slider. Moving down one step typically costs you some shadow detail and draw distance and buys back a meaningful amount of battery. On a screen the size of a phone, held at arm's length, the visual difference is much smaller than the same change on a television.
Turn the brightness down
The display is one of the largest single consumers of power in a phone, and games tend to be played at full brightness because you started outside or because the game looks better that way. Dropping brightness to the lowest comfortable level is free, immediate and reversible.
Deal with heat, not just power
Heat is the part most people miss. A hot phone is a slow phone: when internal temperatures climb, the device deliberately reduces performance to protect itself. You end up with a worse frame rate and a faster-draining battery, and sustained heat is hard on the battery's long-term health as well.
- Take a thick or insulating case off during a long session.
- Do not play while fast-charging if you can avoid it — charging and heavy gaming both generate heat, and doing them together is the worst case.
- Keep the phone out of direct sunlight, which is a bigger factor than it sounds.
- Give it a minute between matches rather than queueing instantly for an hour.
The settings that matter less than you think
- Closing background apps. Both mobile platforms suspend apps you are not using. Force-quitting everything before you play mostly costs you the time it takes to reload them later.
- Turning off Wi-Fi or mobile data. Online games need the connection, and radio power is small next to the graphics processor.
- Battery-saver modes. These help, but largely by throttling performance and dimming the screen — the same things you can do deliberately, with more control over what you give up.
If you want one change
Open the graphics settings of the game you play most and look for a frame rate cap. Halving it is usually the largest single improvement available to you, and in most genres you will stop noticing within a session.
